About Leonardo DRS Inc (DRS)
Leonardo DRS, Inc. is a US-based defense-technology company that provides advanced sensing, force protection, network computing, and electric-power-and-propulsion solutions primarily to the US Department of Defense and allied militaries. Listed on the NASDAQ under DRS and headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, the company is majority-owned (~73%) by Italian aerospace giant Leonardo S.p.A. following a 2022 merger with RADA Electronic Industries. CEO Bill Lynn is a former Deputy Secretary of Defense.
DRS is a Tier-1 subcontractor to virtually every major US defense prime (Lockheed Martin, RTX, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, Boeing) and directly to the DoD across all four service branches. Its product portfolio includes: infrared imaging systems (thermal weapon sights, missile seekers, night vision), tactical radar for ground-based air defense, network computing and communications for command-and-control, electric-drive systems for the US Army's next-generation combat vehicles, and — critically — electric power systems for US Navy submarines including the Columbia-class ballistic-missile submarine program.
The Columbia-class submarine program alone is a multi-decade, multi-billion-dollar revenue tailwind — DRS provides the electric propulsion and power systems for what will be America's most-critical strategic nuclear deterrent for the next 40+ years. Combined with growing demand for infrared imaging (as the Army modernizes its optics), tactical radar (Israel, Ukraine, Taiwan have driven surging global demand), and electric propulsion for future combat vehicles, DRS is arguably the best-positioned mid-cap US defense stock. Risks include: heavy revenue concentration in DoD, contract lumpiness, and margin pressure on fixed-price development programs.
What Leonardo DRS Inc Actually Does
- Infrared imaging (thermal weapon sights, missile seekers, night vision)
- Tactical radar for ground-based air defense (RADA-heritage)
- Network computing and command-and-control systems
- Electric power + propulsion for US Navy submarines (Columbia + Virginia class)
- Electric-drive systems for US Army combat vehicles
- Force protection (active protection systems for armored vehicles)
Investment Thesis
Columbia-class submarine program is a multi-decade revenue tailwind, virtually recession-proof. Tactical radar demand is surging globally (Ukraine + Israel + Taiwan). Infrared imaging is a growth product line as US Army modernizes optics. Mid-cap defense stocks have consistently outperformed the primes over the past 3 years.
Small free float (Leonardo S.p.A. owns 73%) limits institutional-investor accumulation. Revenue is heavily concentrated in US DoD — vulnerable to any budget continuing resolution or sequestration. Fixed-price development programs (naval propulsion) carry margin risk.
