About Boeing Co (BA)

The Boeing Company is America's largest aerospace manufacturer and one of only two global producers of large commercial airliners (the other being Europe's Airbus). Listed on the NYSE under BA and headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, Boeing is a member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and one of the S&P 500's largest industrial constituents. New CEO Kelly Ortberg took over in August 2024 to lead Boeing through what is arguably the most challenging period in its 108-year history.

Boeing operates three reporting segments. **Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA)** builds the 737 MAX, 767, 777, 787 Dreamliner, and 747 (production ended 2023) — this is the segment most in the public eye following the January 2024 door-plug incident on Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9, subsequent FAA production caps, and a lengthy 2024 machinist strike. **Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS)** builds the F-15EX, F/A-18 Super Hornet, KC-46 tanker, MQ-25 Stingray unmanned refueler, Apache and Chinook helicopters, Starliner crew capsule (still working through issues), and various satellite programs. **Boeing Global Services** provides parts, maintenance, training, and modifications for both commercial and military customers.

The investor thesis on BA is entirely about the operational turnaround. Backlog is massive (~5,500 airplanes, ~$470B, roughly 7 years of production at target rates), and demand for the 737 MAX and 787 remains enormous. But actually producing them at quality and cadence has been the challenge. If Ortberg can stabilize production, work through quality/certification issues, and de-lever the balance sheet, the earnings power is significant. If not, BA remains a value trap. Free cash flow is expected to inflect from negative to positive in 2025-2026.

What Boeing Co Actually Does

  • 737 MAX narrow-body airliner (largest program by units)
  • 787 Dreamliner wide-body airliner
  • 777 / 777X wide-body airliner
  • F-15EX, F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets
  • KC-46 Pegasus aerial refueling tanker
  • MQ-25 Stingray unmanned tanker + Apache/Chinook helicopters
  • Starliner crewed capsule + satellite programs
  • Global Services (aftermarket parts, maintenance, training)

Investment Thesis

▲ Bull Case

Massive $470B+ backlog gives visibility for the rest of the decade. Only 2 global manufacturers of large commercial airliners — duopoly economics when execution improves. Free cash flow should inflect positive in 2025-2026. Defense side (~30% of revenue) provides some countercyclical exposure.

▼ Bear Case

Production quality, FAA scrutiny, machinist labor relations, and the Starliner situation are all overhanging concerns. Balance sheet carries significant debt from COVID + 737 MAX grounding losses. Any additional in-flight incident would be catastrophic. Dividend remains suspended.
