About Amprius Technologies Inc (AMPX)
Amprius Technologies, Inc. is a Fremont, California-based advanced-battery company that develops and manufactures silicon-anode lithium-ion cells achieving industry-leading energy density (>500 Wh/kg vs ~275 Wh/kg for typical EV cells). Listed on the NYSE under AMPX, Amprius went public via SPAC merger in September 2022 and is one of the few US-listed pure plays on next-generation battery chemistry. Founded in 2008 by Stanford professor Yi Cui, the company holds foundational patents on silicon-nanowire anode architecture.
Amprius's cells target premium applications where energy density matters far more than cost per kWh — the opposite of the commodity EV-battery market. Primary customers include: high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) UAVs like AeroVironment's Puma and Airbus Zephyr, electric aircraft startups (Kitty Hawk-heritage, US Air Force electric-VTOL programs), medical devices, and US defense platforms via the Department of Defense's small business and prototype programs. Amprius's SiCore silicon-anode chemistry is being scaled at a Fremont manufacturing facility and via a planned larger-scale gigafactory in Brighton, Colorado.
The investor thesis is a bet on premium battery differentiation: while Chinese cells dominate cost-sensitive EV markets, Amprius owns the high-end energy-density segment where western defense and aerospace customers cannot use Chinese product for national security reasons. Revenue is small (~$25-50M annually) and cash burn continues as manufacturing capacity ramps. This is a highly-speculative small-cap position — high upside if the technology scales, meaningful downside if cash runs out or competitors close the gap.
What Amprius Technologies Inc Actually Does
- SiCore silicon-anode lithium-ion cells (>500 Wh/kg)
- High-altitude long-endurance (HALE) UAV batteries
- Electric aircraft + eVTOL battery packs
- Defense/DoD prototype and small-business awards
- Medical device batteries
- Fremont, California manufacturing + planned Brighton, Colorado gigafactory
Investment Thesis
Owns leading silicon-anode battery patents from Stanford professor Yi Cui. Cells achieve ~2x energy density of commodity EV cells — a genuine technical moat. US defense + aerospace customers cannot use Chinese cells, creating a captive premium market. Brighton gigafactory would materially expand capacity.
Revenue is very small (~$25-50M/year) and cash burn is meaningful. Cell technology has struggled to scale from lab to volume manufacturing for many competitors historically. Small-cap SPAC-heritage stock is highly volatile. Silicon-anode competition is intensifying (Sila, StoreDot, Group14, ONE) as EV OEMs invest in the category.
